How Pastors Can Grow a Thriving Online Community
6 Actions to Build Genuine Relationships Online as a Social Media Influencer for Christ
Have you ever wondered how to build meaningful relationships with people online? The good news is, you can do it. You can be a social media influencer for Christ, using digital tools to form connections that lead people to faith. My PhD research has revealed six specific actions that will help you cultivate real, lasting relationships online. Let’s dive in!
Understanding Parasocial Relationships
In the last post, we introduced parasocial relationships—one-sided connections where people feel an emotional bond with someone they follow online. Though these relationships may be one-sided, they feel real to the brain. Social media influencers actively cultivate these connections and then monetize their influence through sponsorships, merchandise, and ads.
But what if pastors and church leaders leveraged this same phenomenon for evangelism? Instead of monetizing followers, you can encourage them to take meaningful steps in their faith journey. Here’s how.
6 Actions to Build Relationships Online
1. Be Consistent
Nothing matters more than showing up regularly. You need to post at least once a week across multiple platforms like YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. No weeks off! Studies show that repeated exposure strengthens parasocial bonds. Whether it’s one video per week or five, consistency is key.
2. Look Directly Into the Camera
Making eye contact with your viewers fosters a personal connection. Studies show that direct eye contact enhances the illusion of an intimate relationship. When recording, imagine a close friend on the other side of the lens and speak directly to them.
3. Offer Value Through Teaching and Encouragement
People follow influencers for knowledge, inspiration, and entertainment. Meet real needs by addressing topics like:
- Anxiety and loneliness
- Broken relationships
- Finding purpose in life
Offer biblical insights and encouragement that inspire your audience to take action. Give them hope and practical steps for spiritual growth.
4. Be Vulnerable
Self-disclosure strengthens relationships, especially when you share personal struggles. Tell an embarrassing story, a failure, or a challenge you’ve overcome. Being authentic makes you relatable, and people are drawn to influencers who show vulnerability and authenticity.
5. Encourage Interaction
Engagement deepens connections. Ask your audience questions, respond to comments, and acknowledge feedback. Even one-sided interactions enhance parasocial relationships, but when you actively engage, it strengthens the bond even more.
6. Express Positive Feelings Toward Your Followers
One surprising finding in my research is that expressing warmth and kindness significantly enhances parasocial connections.
Think of Paul’s letters in the Bible:
“I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy.” (Philippians 1:3-4)
Let your followers know that you appreciate them. Tell them you pray for them, cheer them on, and believe in them. A little encouragement goes a long way.
