Have you ever hesitated to step into a role because you didn’t feel qualified? Maybe you’ve told yourself, “I’m not good at this,” and decided to sit out. While it’s natural to want to stick to your strengths, sometimes stepping into unfamiliar territory can lead to unexpected growth—not just for you, but for those around you.

In this post, we’ll explore why it’s sometimes good to do things you’re not great at and how God can work through your weaknesses to accomplish amazing things.

1. It Builds Resilience

Stepping out of your comfort zone forces you to grow. The Apostle Paul reminds us in Romans 5:3-4, “Suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.” When you take on something outside your expertise, it can feel like a struggle. But in that struggle, resilience is born.

The next time you feel stretched, remember: you’re not just surviving—you’re growing stronger.

2. It Stimulates Cognitive Growth

Trying something new stimulates your brain’s neuroplasticity—the ability to form new connections and solve problems creatively. Tackling new challenges sharpens your mind, builds adaptability, and even opens doors to discovering hidden talents. You may not excel at everything, but the effort itself can lead to unexpected opportunities.

3. It Broadens Your Skill Set

Sometimes, you step up simply because there’s no one else available. But even when you’re the “last resort,” God can use your willingness to serve for His glory. By pushing past your limitations, you may uncover complementary skills that enrich your ministry and expand your capacity to lead.

4. It Fosters Humility

Few things humble us more than stepping into a task we’re not naturally skilled at. It reminds us of our dependence on God. As Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 12:9, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” When we embrace our limitations, we create space for God’s strength to shine through.

Embracing Weakness for God’s Glory

When I led worship at my church—a role I’m not naturally gifted in—I was reminded of these truths. It wasn’t the best music ever played, but God still moved in incredible ways. People worshiped, and lives were impacted. My effort, though imperfect, became a tool in God’s hands.

What About You?

Is God asking you to step into a role that feels outside your comfort zone? Don’t shy away. By saying yes, you’ll grow in resilience, stimulate your brain, develop empathy for others, and learn to fully rely on God’s power.

You’re in this moment for a reason. As Joshua 1:9 reminds us, “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

Take the Step Whatever God is calling you to do—even if it’s something you’re not great at—step out in faith. He placed you where you are for a purpose. Trust Him to work through your weaknesses and use you for His glory.
