You Are God’s Masterpiece: 4 Steps to Restore Your Original Design
You Are God’s Masterpiece: 4 Steps to Restore Your Original Design
Have you ever felt like you’ve drifted from who you were meant to be? Maybe you’ve lost sight of your true self under the weight of expectations, wounds, or lies. The good news is this: you are God’s masterpiece. He created you with an original design—unique, intentional, and filled with potential. And no matter how far you’ve strayed, Jesus can restore you to the person you were always meant to be.
What Is Your Original Design?
Your original design is the identity, purpose, and character God envisioned for you before you took your first breath. Scripture reminds us of this truth:
- “So God created human beings in his own image.” (Genesis 1:27)
- “For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.” (Ephesians 2:10)
You are not a copy or a remix. You are an intentional, one-of-a-kind creation, shaped by the hands of a loving God.
But life happens. Wounds, lies, and choices pull us away from our original design. Slowly, we drift, and before we realize it, we find ourselves living far from the freedom and joy God intended.
Why Do We Drift?
There are many reasons we lose sight of who God created us to be:
- Wounds: Words spoken over us, rejection, or trauma distort our view of ourselves.
- Lies: Subtle influences from culture, comparison, or shame lure us into false identities.
- Choices: When we prioritize control, performance, or approval over surrender, we distance ourselves from God’s purpose.
Over time, these layers build up, leaving us disconnected from our true design. But there is a way back.
Spiritual Growth Is a Spiral
Author Robert Mulholland describes spiritual growth as a spiral rather than a straight line. We revisit the same themes—surrender, obedience, identity—over and over, each time at a deeper level. Drifting does not always mean failure. Sometimes, it is part of the growth process.
What matters most is how we return to Jesus when we recognize that we’ve drifted.
Four Steps Back to Your Original Design
When my daughter, Zoey, shared with me about the idea of “original design,” she also showed me the four steps God uses to restore us:
1. Repent
Turn around. Acknowledge where you’ve drifted. Repentance is not about shame; it is about reset. It is saying, “God, I’ve gone my own way. I want to follow You again.”
2. Receive
Receive Jesus as Lord, not just Savior. Open your hands and let Him reorder your priorities. Receive His grace, His Spirit, and His design for your life.
3. Rebuke
Reject the lies that hold you captive. Lies like “I’m not enough,” “I’m all alone,” or “I’ll never change” do not come from God. In the name of Jesus, rebuke those lies and break agreement with them.
4. Replace
Don’t just reject lies; replace them with truth. Declare God’s Word over your life:
- “I am enough because Jesus lives in me.”
- “I am not alone, for God will never leave me or forsake me.”
- “I can change, because the Holy Spirit is still working in me.”
- “God can use me, because His power is made perfect in weakness.”
Speak it out. Write it down. Anchor yourself in God’s truth.
A Rhythm of Returning
Restoration is not a one-time fix. It is a rhythm of returning. Every time you repent, receive, rebuke, and replace, you draw closer to the original design God envisioned for you.
So if you feel like you’ve drifted, remember this: Jesus has not left you. He is not shaming or scolding you. He is inviting you back with open arms, saying, “Come back. Let Me lead you again.”
Final Thoughts
Pastor, I want to remind you: you are a masterpiece in progress. God sees the beauty of your original design—even when you don’t. He’s not finished with you. He’s still working, still shaping, still refining you through every season of ministry and every moment of surrender. So even if you feel like you’ve drifted…come back. Let Him lead again. He’s got an incredible plan for your life, your family, and your church. And He will finish the work He started. I love you guys. I’m cheering for you. We’ll see you next time
